Five people are missing and eight others injured after a restaurant with apartments was destroyed by fire in the Swiss town of Thusis, police said.

Initial investigations indicate the blaze began on the second floor, with the cause still under investigation by Graubünden cantonal police.

The emergency call came just after midnight local time. Nearly 100 firefighters responded; the roof had to be opened with a crane because the stairwell collapsed.

The Alpine Graubünden region—popular for winter sports and summer nature activities—was struck by the tragedy.

Fourteen people escaped the building, with two seriously injured, two moderately injured, and four with minor injuries. Victims were transported to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich.

Police and the public prosecutor’s office are investigating the cause of the fire.
