Fida al‑Toutah, age 31, lying in a tent after gunfire

Last October, a mother of five was combing her daughter’s hair in a tent in central Gaza when the sound of gunfire filled the air. The child’s brother, weeping, later told the BBC that his mother was hit by a projectile. Fida al‑Toutah died on 21 September from a gunshot wound to the head.

This personal tragedy is one of more than 1,400 civilians killed by Israeli attacks since the ceasefire that began on 10 October last year, according to Gaza’s health ministry – a figure the United Nations considers reliable. While the truce halted the large‑scale bombardment that had triggered a humanitarian crisis, it has not stopped daily Israeli strikes that the Israeli Defense Forces say target Hamas operatives.

The families for whom Fida’s death was a reality are still living in constant terror. Her husband Ahed, her brother Ibrahim and others have left the neighbourhood of Zeitoun at least seven times in pursuit of safety, yet each return brings new echoes of shelling. The district they fled to is now a densely packed tent city where every shoot echoes across the streets.

Israel’s official position remains that it has no record of the incident and that its operations are aimed at eliminating a hostile militia. The IDF says it is carrying out ‘strictly targeted’ strikes to protect Israeli security, while the Gaza health ministry counts dozens of additional casualties each week.

Beyond the loss of life, the war has left a broader crisis. The ceasefire has stalled reconstruction efforts; Israel restricts materials and machinery that could help rebuild, citing security concerns. The United Nations warns that Gaza’s population — now forced into roughly 40 % of its land — is trapped in a cycle of displacement, while a 2025 peace deal remains inert, its second phase blocked by continued fighting.
