In brief
A tragic incident unfolded in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province, as flames engulfed the KM Barcelona 5 vessel, leading to at least three fatalities among over 200 passengers onboard.
A fire broke out early Sunday morning on the KM Barcelona 5, a passenger ship traveling from the Talaud Islands to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi. Authorities confirmed that at least three individuals have lost their lives due to the incident, while the total count of rescued, injured, and missing passengers remains unclear. Vice Adm. Denih Hendrata, leader of the Indonesian Fleet Command, disclosed that the alarming incident occurred near Talise. Video footage from the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) captured the desperate situation, showing thick black smoke billowing from the vessel and passengers donning life jackets as they were rescued. The ship was reportedly carrying approximately 280 passengers at the time of the fire.Efforts to rescue those affected involved multiple larger rescue ships and smaller inflatable boats, yet officials have not determined the cause of the blaze nor which company operates the KM Barcelona 5. Safety concerns regarding maritime travel remain a significant issue in Indonesia, a nation of over 17,000 islands, where ferry-related incidents have previously caused casualties. Just earlier this month, a separate tragedy claimed five lives and left 29 missing when the KMT Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry sank en route to Bali. The situation remains under investigation as rescue operations continue, and further details are yet to be disclosed.
