In brief

Local authorities investigate potential pollution sources after alarming sightings.

A canal in a suburb of Buenos Aires has turned a disturbing bright red, frightening residents and drawing media attention. On Thursday, footage emerged showing the Sarandí canal, with vibrant red water flowing into the nearby Rio de la Plata estuary which is adjacent to an ecological reserve.Reports suggest that the unusual coloration might be linked to the illegal disposal of textile dyes or chemical byproducts from local industrial activities. In response to the incident, the Environment Ministry collected water samples from the canal to ascertain the specific cause of this dramatic hue change.By Thursday evening, the color appeared to lessen, instilling some relief among locals. However, residents have voiced longstanding concerns about industrial waste polluting the waterway. One local identified as Silvia shared with C5N that despite the current lack of odor, previous color changes included yellow tones accompanied by unpleasant sulfuric smells that caused physical discomfort. Maria Ducomls, another resident, elaborated that over time, the water has shifted through various bizarre colors, including bluish and lilac shades, often topped with a greasy film, highlighting ongoing pollution issues from nearby leather and textile factories. As the investigation continues, community members are left grappling with the fear of inadequate environmental controls in their neighborhood.
