LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A man being questioned by police at a suburban Atlanta hotel on Sunday shot two officers after inviting them into his room, resulting in the death of one officer and serious injury to another.
The shooting suspect, identified as Kevin Andrews, was also injured during the incident and is expected to survive, according to Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure.
The shootout occurred Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, approximately 25 miles northeast of Atlanta, where officers were dispatched following a report of credit card fraud linked to the hotel. The front desk clerk directed them to Andrews' room.
McClure stated that the suspect greeted the officers at the door and allowed them inside to discuss the incident. Unexpectedly, he drew a firearm and fired at the officers.
Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital, while Officer David Reed remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
“This incident highlights the dangers law enforcement face daily, and we are thankful for every individual who risks their lives to protect others,” said Governor Brian Kemp in a statement.
McClure confirmed that the investigation has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who will determine potential charges against Andrews.
