In brief

While Washington celebrates the arrival of pandas from China, the Chinese government intensifies crackdowns on panda fandom, targeting influencers and activists who challenge practices related to animal welfare.

Visitors are set to flock to Washington’s National Zoo this Friday for a joyful celebration: the arrival of two pandas on loan from China. Enthusiasts will snap selfies and share their experiences online through social media using the hashtag #DCPandas. However, this cheerful atmosphere stands in stark contrast to the somber developments within China, where the government is tightening its grip on discussions surrounding this cherished national symbol. In a crackdown on panda fandom, authorities have arrested or interrogated influencers who criticized recent panda exchanges or advocated for animal welfare. The Chinese government is sending a strong signal that online discussions regarding pandas should be managed rigorously. Influencers who once enjoyed a degree of tolerance from authorities are now facing scrutiny for spreading what officials deem “rumors” and engaging in “radical fan culture.”Critics, including millions of devoted panda fans, have historically highlighted issues such as aggressive breeding techniques in captivity that have led to injuries and the early separation of cubs from their mothers. However, a notable shift in policy has emerged. Just last month, Sichuan Province police reported the arrests of 12 individuals for alleged harassment of panda experts, incitement to violence, and misinformation related to the beloved bears. Some of those arrested previously resided at the National Zoo in Washington. The crackdown extends to accusations that panda enthusiasts are profiting from live streaming and donations while also supposedly harassing breeding center staff. State media reported that the police have identified so-called “radical animal protection gangs” operating across three provinces, indicating a heightened level of concern from the government over the burgeoning panda fan culture and its potential threats to state narratives.
