On Monday, the parents and wife of 31‑year‑old conservative activist Charlie Kirk approached the Utah County courthouse to witness the preliminary hearing of 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson, charged with the gun‑shot murder that claimed Kirk on Sept. 10, 2025.
The shooting erupted as Kirk spoke at a campus event at Utah Valley University; police later cornered Robinson on Sept. 12, and he faces aggravated murder, felony firearm discharge, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
During the hearing, prosecutors presented evidence and announced that four law‑enforcement witnesses would testify; the defense has sought to suppress evidence and deny the death penalty, also attempting to ban courtroom cameras.
Kirk’s widow Erika, parents Robert and Kathryn, and sister Mary released a statement expressing their grief and gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing their need for privacy during the trial.
The preliminary proceedings will continue through Friday, with courts ultimately deciding whether the death penalty will be invoked amid intense public scrutiny.
