DALLAS (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Texas have charged six more individuals with a new terrorism-related offense following the July shooting outside an immigration detention center near Dallas. This indictment adds to a series of previous charges and leverages President Trump’s declaration that categorizes the antifa movement as a domestic terrorist organization.
The shooting incident took place on July 4 outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, where a police officer was injured. The group reportedly threw fireworks at the facility, vandalized vehicles, and opened fire on law enforcement responding to the scene, resulting in a neck injury to an officer who was later hospitalized.
As deportation efforts intensified under the Trump administration, tensions rose, culminating in this violent confrontation. Patrick McClain, the attorney representing defendant Zachary Evetts, maintained his client's innocence, stating, there is no evidence to support the government’s view of the case. On December 3, Evetts is scheduled to enter a plea regarding the new charges.
Antifa, short for “anti-fascists,” is a term depicting a collection of far-left militant groups opposing neo-Nazism and white supremacy, rather than a unified organization. Critics argue the government's characterization could be politically motivated.
