In brief

Authorities have concluded that three climbers—two Americans and a Canadian—missing for several days near Aoraki/Mount Cook, are likely deceased following extensive search efforts hampered by severe weather conditions.

The New Zealand Police made the grim announcement on Friday, expressing their belief that Kurt Blair, 56, and Carlos Romero, 50, both from the United States, along with an unnamed Canadian climber could not have survived the treacherous environment. The search was called off as authorities gathered evidence from the area, including personal items like a jacket, an ice ax, and energy gels belonging to the climbers. The trio arrived at the mountain region on Saturday, aiming to summit the peak, which stands at roughly 12,000 feet above sea level. They had planned to leave via a charter flight on Monday morning but never appeared. Search efforts commenced on Monday after the men's families alerted authorities about their absence. However, severe weather proved challenging, limiting rescue operations. On Friday, rescuers located footprints and additional gear close to the Zurbriggen Ridge slope, further affirming the harsh realities of the mountain experience. Commander Inspector Vicki Walker noted the lack of communication from the climbers over several days and the items retrieved prompted the decision to suspend all search efforts. Both Americans were certified guides, bringing considerable experience in skiing and alpine climbing as members of the American Mountain Guides Association. The families of the climbers have been notified of the developments regarding the ongoing situation on Aoraki/Mount Cook.
