Buddhist Monk Arrested in Suspected $3M Embezzlement Scandal
Thai police have arrested a Buddhist monk on suspicion of embezzling 100 million baht ($3 million) from his monastery. The accused, Phra Wachirayan Wi, a former abbot at the 14th‑century Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, allegedly pocketed donations over more than 20 occasions in a two‑year span.
He was defrocked after the arrest and has yet to comment publicly. His case follows a wave of scandals, such as a June incident in which nine monks were caught engaging in sex with a woman who blackmailed them.
Police identified two streams of money tied to donation receipts issued by Phra Wachirayan: one for temple renovations and another for amulets and other sacred objects. None of the funds entered the temple’s account.
During a raid on the monk’s residence, officials seized over 100 million baht in cash, gold bars and jewellery. CCTV footage also revealed a clip of him having sex with a 47‑year‑old woman, later identified as Punyavee Rungrueang, who was also arrested on charges related to state corruption.
Punyavee’s home yielded 35 gold amulets, 1.5 kg of gold bars and jewellery worth an estimated 6.04 million baht. Police believe she helped manage the monk’s suspicious proceeds, as large sums flowed through her bank accounts each year.
Investigators began probing the case in mid‑July after receiving an anonymous tip alleging misuse of temple funds. They now suspect several additional parties may be involved but have not yet named them.
The investigation highlights ongoing problems in Thailand’s monastic community, where monks have faced accusations of violating celibacy vows, trafficking drugs, and engaging in financial crimes.
