Belgian Builders Uncover €9m Gold Hoard Stashed in House Walls


During a routine drilling operation to lay new sewage pipes in a charity house in Dendermonde, Belgian construction workers stumbled upon a hidden cache of gold bars and coins. The loot is believed to be worth about €9 million (£7.6 million).

Police quickly moved the treasure to a secured location and launched an investigation. The property belongs to the welfare charity CAW Oost‑Vlaanderen, which owns the house on the Dendermonde campus.


The find has ignited speculation about who might claim the jewel‑laden cache. Under Belgian law, a finder and the property owner can each get a share if no rightful owner emerges within five years. The charity’s director, Geert Hillaert, expressed hope that the gold might ultimately support its daily welfare programmes.


Local police have cautioned the public against visiting the site or attempting to dig for more treasure. Police’s social media posts have even adopted a gold‑coin image as their new profile picture, signalling high public interest.


As the legal process unfolds, all eyes remain on the secure storage where the gold currently sits.
