TEL AVIV, Israel (PulseWire) — The war in the Gaza Strip is starting to look different these days on Israeli news.

For most of the past two years, television stations in Israel have focused on Israeli narratives of heroism and the plight of hostages, largely ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This trend is changing, however, as some Israeli channels begin to showcase graphic images of malnourished children and in-depth reports on everyday life for Palestinians.

This shift coincides with unprecedented global outrage regarding the war, as protests grow regarding the military campaign, despite little impact on government policy.

“It’s about questioning the morality of our actions in Gaza,” noted communications expert Eran Amsalem. This questioning, however, has often faced significant pushback, particularly from pro-Netanyahu media.

The Shock of Oct. 7

The violent events initiated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, where militants raided Israeli towns, resulted in a horrific death toll of approximately 1,200 individuals and widespread hostage-taking.

Despite the extreme violence of that day, Israeli media initially focused predominantly on stories of domestic suffering, while international coverage quickly shifted to the situation in Gaza.

According to Raviv Drucker, a well-known Israeli journalist, local coverage largely disregarded the suffering experienced by Gazans, framing stories exclusively from a domestic viewpoint.

The Challenges of Addressing Gaza's Suffering

As some journalists make efforts to spotlight Gaza’s humanitarian issues, they often encounter backlash. For example, Yonit Levi, a notable news anchor, faced criticism for highlighting international perceptions of Israel's actions as a moral failing.

Despite this resistance, some Israeli media are beginning to delve deeper into the ongoing crisis in Gaza, including the dire consequences of the current blockade on humanitarian aid, which has led to widespread starvation.

Signs of Change

Recent weeks have seen an evolution in the coverage of Gaza, with some Israeli journalists producing stories on the starvation crisis exacerbated by a protracted blockade.

However, coverage remains skewed toward domestic narratives, indicating a societal reluctance to fully embrace stories of Palestinian suffering. Journalist Nir Hasson expressed hope that Israeli society could handle more nuanced discussions regarding the conflict, suggesting that media narratives may be overly cautious.
