Ariana Grande takes a break from public life amid body and scrutiny issues

Three years ago, in a TikTok video, Grande asked fans to stop commenting on her figure, reminding everyone that there are “many different ways to look healthy and beautiful.” The plea was a response to online remarks about her weight and body.

Despite the effort, the social‑media chatter continued. Her spokesperson released a statement saying the singer will step back from public appearances after her current Eternal Sunshine Tour finishes. The statement highlighted that she wanted to end the tour “on a high note, both healthily and happily” before taking a break from the spotlight to escape the “endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”

Grande released the video for her new single Petal on Friday.

The song’s lyrics speak to the pressure of fame. In the accompanying video, she portrays a starlet trying out different personas for talent scouts, none of which are approved. Comments flooded the internet, with some critics calling the scrutiny a concern for her health and others worrying that it was intrusive.

Grande’s fans created the hashtag #Weloveyouariana in response to the conversation, while other users urged the public to stop body‑shaming. “No one has the right to comment on someone else’s body or appearance,” a user wrote. Music journalist Sophie Williams added that the comment trend “has really, really elevated over the weekend” as Grande promoted her new music.

The singer will finish her tour in Chicago, then perform ten dates at London’s O2 Arena, ending on 1 September. In doing so, she will also postpone her upcoming role in Stephen Sondheim’s stage musical Sunday in the Park with George, slated for 2027. Grande has been in the public eye for more than 15 years, and she says the constant attention makes it hard to protect herself from noise.

During the press tour for the Wicked film (2024), she shared that she experienced the “unhealthiest version of my body” while on antidepressants and struggling with a diet, and she emphasized that “healthy can look different.” She encourages fans to be gentler about body commentary, even when the intent is positive.

The summer also saw the launch of Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, a mental‑health initiative aimed at supporting her crew and performers on the tour. The foundation highlights the lasting trauma that can arise from public scrutiny, something that Grande acknowledges from her experience.
