In brief

After enduring a harrowing detention in Iran, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala is on her way home, as confirmed by the Italian government. The 29-year-old was released after being held for nearly three weeks on allegations of violating local laws during her reporting trip.

Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist who was detained last month in Iran while on a reporting trip, was released and en route back to Italy on Wednesday, the Italian government announced. "The plane carrying journalist Cecilia Sala has just taken off from Tehran," the government stated this morning, highlighting that "thanks to intensive diplomatic and intelligence efforts, our compatriot was freed by the Iranian authorities." While Iran has yet to comment regarding her release, the particulars surrounding her arrest are also sparse. Ms. Sala, who is 29, spent 20 days in custody, and it was reported that she was kept in an isolation cell with minimal comfort, having only two blankets and enduring constant light. Her partner, Daniele Raineri, shared a much-awaited call from Ms. Sala, who expressed her joy, saying, “I am free.” Raineri expressed his relief and gratitude for the Italian government's efforts, saying, “The wait was excruciating, but Italy did an exceptional job.” Sala was initially arrested on December 19 under charges of breaching laws set by the Islamic Republic. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reached out to Sala's parents on Wednesday to inform them of her return. This unfolding narrative continues to develop, with further updates anticipated as her situation is closely monitored.
