The ballet world is in mourning following the tragic death of Vladimir Shklyarov, a prominent male dancer and principal of the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre. Reports confirmed Shklyarov's death, which occurred as an investigation by federal authorities has been initiated following the incident.
According to company representatives, Shklyarov fell from the fifth floor of a building in St. Petersburg while reportedly on painkillers. The Mariinsky Theatre expressed its heartfelt sorrow in a statement, recognizing the monumental impact of Shklyarov's artistry. "This is a huge loss not only for the theatre's staff but for all of contemporary ballet," the statement read, extending condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.
A talented artist, Shklyarov was married to dancer Maria Shklyarov with whom he shared two children. Born in Leningrad and a graduate of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in 2003, he joined Mariinsky that same year and ascended to principal dancer status in 2011. Over his impressive twenty-year career, Shklyarov captivated audiences in multiple productions, including "Giselle," "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Romeo and Juliet." He was celebrated at significant venues across the globe, including the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
The American Ballet Theatre paid tribute to Shklyarov as well, expressing sorrow over his "tragic loss." In their heartfelt homage, they noted, "Your light will continue to shine through the beauty you brought to this world."
Throughout his career, Shklyarov won numerous accolades, including the Léonide Massine International Prize in 2008 and was recognized as an Honoured Artist of Russia in 2020.
