In brief
Rosita Missoni, the revered co-founder of the legendary Italian knitwear brand Missoni, has passed away at the age of 93. Her innovative designs and the distinctive zig-zag motif made her a trailblazer in the fashion world.
In a statement confirming her death, Attilio Fontana, the president of Lombardy, expressed profound sadness, acknowledging the significant impact of Missoni on Italy’s cultural landscape. He referred to her passing as “a great loss for Italy, Lombardy, and the province of Varese where she was both born and raised.” Rosita, born in 1931 in Golasecca, Lombardy, established Missoni alongside her late husband, Ottavio, in 1953. Their journey began in a small knitwear workshop in Gallarate, located northwest of Milan.Rosita’s life was marked by creativity and resilience. During a visit to London for language studies, she met Ottavio, known affectionately as Tai, during the 1948 Olympic Games, where he competed in the 400m hurdles. The couple married soon after in 1953, and Rosita humorously recalled how their wedding was accompanied by four sewing machines, signifying the origin of their fashion adventure. The brand gained significant traction in 1958 when a Milan department store ordered a large quantity of Missoni's distinctive striped dresses. The launch of their first catwalk show in 1966 solidified their presence in the fashion industry, particularly after a controversial showcase that showcased the brand’s daring innovation with see-through garments, which captivated global audiences.Although Tai passed away in 2013, at the age of 92, Rosita’s spirit and creativity continued to thrive. Their daughter, Angela Missoni, assumed control of the fashion house in the late 1990s, while Rosita remained actively involved with the Missoni Home collection. Rosita Missoni's legacy as a vibrant pioneer of fashion will endure, inspiring future generations of designers and fashion enthusiasts alike.
