Rescuers say at least 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military indicated that a drone was launched from Yemen.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the drone struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, despite attempts to intercept it.

The Magen David Adom emergency medical service confirmed that 20 individuals were taken to Yoseftal Hospital, including two men with severe limb injuries.

The Iranian-backed Houthi group has claimed responsibility for the attack, with their spokesman Yahya Sarea stating that two drones targeted 'Israeli enemy targets' as a successful operation.

Live broadcasts from Israeli TV showcased footage of the drone strike, displaying considerable smoke rising from the impact site.

Footage verified by the BBC showed a drone flying unnoticed towards buildings before the attack commenced.

According to the IDF, units from both the military and the Israel Police responded to the area, aiding in the evacuation and dispatching helicopters to assist the wounded.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed wishes for a swift recovery to those injured and warned that 'Houthi terrorists' would ultimately face severe consequences for their actions.

This drone strike is one of the most serious incidents initiated by the Houthis, marking a dangerous escalation following a history of attacks on Israeli territory from Yemen.

The Houthis have been carrying out missile and drone strikes on Israel as expressions of solidarity with Palestinians amidst ongoing conflict in Gaza. Past incidents include an attack on Tel Aviv in July that resulted in one death and several injuries.

As Israel retaliates with bombings on Houthi-controlled regions in Yemen, the cycle of violence appears to be intensifying, with both sides bearing the brunt of escalated military actions.
