In the early hours of Thursday, a fatal incident occurred on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, Spain, as confirmed by Spanish police. Diogo Jota, who had been part of Liverpool F.C. and was recently married, perished in the accident alongside his 26-year-old brother, Andrés, also a professional soccer player in Portugal.
The española Guardia Civil reported that emergency services were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. They indicated that preliminary investigations suggested a tire blowout led to the vehicle veering off the road, catching fire, and ultimately resulting in the tragic loss of both occupants. An official statement described the incident noting the vehicle’s flames spread to surrounding vegetation due to the intensity of the fire.
A post on X from the Zamora council confirmed the involvement of fire crews responding to the blaze, which had engulfed the crash site, resulting in the deaths of the young men.
Diogo Jota was born in Porto, Portugal, and began his professional soccer journey in various leagues in his homeland and Spain before joining the English Premier League in 2017 with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He made a significant impact at Liverpool, contributing to their Premier League title victory last season.
