In brief

Amidst escalating violence in Eastern Congo, the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has seized the city of Goma, leading to a surge in fear among citizens, many of whom are fleeing the conflict.

As violence continues to ravage eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23 militia, allegedly supported by Rwanda, has announced the capture of Goma, a strategically significant city. This development marks a serious escalation in the long-standing conflict between the two nations. The M23 group, which briefly occupied Goma in 2012 before its defeat, appears poised this time to establish a lasting presence in the region, potentially to exploit its rich resources. On Sunday, individuals already displaced by ongoing violence fled to Goma in search of shelter, only to face the grim reality of living under the control of the very militia they were trying to escape. A spokesman for M23 proclaimed the "liberation of Goma" via a post on social media platform X, stating that Congolese forces were compelled to disarm and gather at a local stadium. However, reports of gunfire persisted into the early hours of Monday, raising questions about the situation's stability. This ongoing conflict in the region, which covers an area roughly the size of Michigan, has been described as Africa’s World War, drawing in numerous armed factions since the 1990s. Currently, M23 stands as the dominant force, reflecting the complex and multi-layered nature of tensions in this resource-rich area.
