In brief

Witnesses recount the panic and fears that gripped them while exiting the plane, leading to a miraculous survival for all on board.

28 minutes ago"Terrifying and exhausting" — these are the words used by passengers of an American Airlines flight that faced a life-threatening incident after being forced to make an emergency landing in Denver, Colorado. The flight, which was en route to Dallas with 172 passengers and six crew members, ignited panic as smoke began to fill the cabin after finding safety on the ground. One of the passengers, Michele Woods, described the flight as initially normal until a deafening noise erupted from the plane's engine during cruising. Following this alarming noise, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the crew diverted the flight to Denver shortly after 5:15 p.m. local time due to pronounced engine vibrations.Once on land, the horror for some passengers was far from over. Woods detailed how smoke rapidly filled the cabin, prompting a chaotic escape onto the plane's wing, as captured in viral photographs of terrified passengers huddled on the wing, while smoke billowed around them. Ingrid Hibbit, a fellow passenger traveling with her family, specifically described the scene from her window where flames flickered and the windows began to distort from heat. Separated from her loved ones, she clambered out onto the wing in Birkenstock sandals, battling her own fears while anxiously texting family members who were not seated nearby. “I was like shaking, I was not stable,” she admitted of the 10-minute ordeal that felt interminable.Ultimately, the family survived and made it to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, breathing sighs of relief after evading what could have been a far worse scenario, expressing gratitude for their safety. “If this would've happened in the air, I don't think we would be telling this story at all,” Hibbit noted, thankful for their lives and that of their fellow passengers.
