In brief
In a dramatic turn of events, rebels in Myanmar, who previously captured the city of Lashio from the military junta, have quietly retreated under apparent pressure from China. This maneuver represents a significant setback for Myanmar's resistance, which had been buoyed by their previous victory. Thousands of fighters from various groups convened in August to overthrow the military stronghold, but in late April, a military convoy reclaimed the city without a fight.
The rebels' withdrawal was reportedly influenced by China's intervention to safeguard its investments in Myanmar, which include pipelines and infrastructure projects tied to the Belt and Road Initiative. By blocking border trade and cutting off essential services in the region, China compelled the rebels to vacate Lashio. Experts and rebel leaders assert that Beijing's actions underscore its self-serving interests in the region, despite its claims of non-involvement in Myanmar's internal affairs.
