In brief

In a dramatic escalation, President Trump has publicly criticized Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky for rejecting a contentious U.S. peace proposal aimed at resolving the three-year conflict with Russia. Trump voiced his frustration via social media, claiming, “He can have Peace or, he can fight for another three years before losing the whole Country.”

The proposed plan, articulated by Vice President JD Vance, suggests a “freeze” of territorial lines, legitimizes Russia's annexation of Crimea, and includes assurances that Ukraine will refrain from joining NATO. This proposal starkly aligns with Moscow's interests, marking the first time a U.S. official has openly supported terms beneficial to Russia in this manner. Vance warned that if both Ukraine and Russia do not accept the deal, the U.S. would withdraw from further negotiations, effectively sidelining Ukraine's sovereignty.Zelensky responded strongly, asserting that Ukraine would never recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea, declaring, “There is nothing to talk about. This violates our Constitution.” Trump, in turn, accused Zelensky of making “inflammatory” comments and questioned Ukraine’s commitment to defending its territory, stating, “If he wants Crimea, why didn’t they fight for it eleven years ago when it was handed over to Russia without a shot being fired?” With close to 20% of Ukraine presently occupied by Russian forces, the proposal’s acceptance would amount to an enforced surrender of significant regions, complicating an already fraught diplomatic landscape.
