In brief

Ukrainian President proposes a cease-fire as both sides exchange increased fire ahead of critical negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.

On the morning of March 11, 2025, Ukraine executed one of its most significant drone bombardments against Russia, with numerous strikes aimed at the Moscow region. This offensive came just as peace talks were set to take place to resolve the prolonged conflict that has persisted for three years. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that they successfully intercepted 337 drones, with around 91 focusing on the heart of the capital. Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, described the scale of this latest attack as the largest the city has experienced since the war commenced. As reported, the consequences included at least two casualties and 14 injuries. One residential building was damaged, and all four international airports servicing the 21 million residents of the metropolitan area had to halt operations temporarily due to security concerns linked to the drone impacts. In a bid to lay the groundwork for trust leading into the peace discussions, Ukraine has put forth a proposal for an immediate cease-fire in airstrikes. This proposal, contingent upon Moscow's agreement to cease long-range attacks, has garnered support from several European nations like France. The initiative aims to mitigate hostilities as the stakes rise higher, with estimates suggesting over a million military personnel from both sides have been either killed or wounded since the conflict's inception.
