President-elect Donald Trump has announced his nomination of Sean Duffy, a former congressman and Fox Business host, to head the Department of Transportation. Duffy, who represented Wisconsin from 2011 to 2019 and is known for being one of Trump’s staunch defenders in the media, would take over a department with a hefty annual budget of around $110 billion, overseeing various transportation policies, including aviation and auto regulations.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump praised Duffy for his public service and bipartisan respect, indicating he would leverage his Congressional experience to advance the nation’s infrastructure and introduce a new "Golden Age of Travel." Trump expressed confidence that Duffy would bring a family-centered perspective to his role, noting his own large family and the importance of safe travel for citizens.
Before his political career, Duffy made a name for himself as a prosecutor and reality TV personality, having appeared on shows like The Real World: Boston and Road Rules: All Stars. With his appointment, Duffy would succeed current Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was appointed by President Biden and has been involved in ongoing critical discussions surrounding transportation issues.
The Department of Transportation, which employs around 55,000 people, plays a crucial role in the safety and sustainability of transport across the country. Duffy’s administration would need to address persistent safety concerns, notably with Boeing's ongoing troubles, alongside the possibility of labor disputes. Moreover, Duffy could face challenges due to Trump’s intentions to roll back Biden’s vehicle emission standards, raising further questions about regulatory and safety issues in the transportation sector.
As his administration takes shape, Trump continues to prioritize close allies for key positions rather than individuals with extensive policy backgrounds, signaling a shift in approach as he prepares to take office again.
