Pope Francis has opened up about facing a "period of trial" in his health journey, expressing heartfelt gratitude to those who have reached out with prayers. The 88-year-old pontiff has been recovering in a hospital following his admission on February 14 due to pneumonia. In his latest message, he referenced Biblical texts and offered prayers for peace in nations suffering from conflict. This marks the fifth consecutive Sunday that he has been unable to deliver his traditional blessing in person. However, the Vatican recently confirmed improvements in his condition, post an X-ray, though the Pope remains under hospital care.
"The Holy Father still requires medical therapy, along with motor and respiratory physiotherapy; these therapies are showing gradual improvements," stated the Vatican on Saturday. Since his hospitalization, the Pope has faced challenges including double pneumonia and multiple respiratory crises, raising concerns over his health status.
"I stand in solidarity with countless brothers and sisters who are unwell and fragile at this moment, much like myself," the Pope remarked in today's message. He emphasized the importance of continued prayers for peace, particularly in conflict-ridden areas like Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Having been hospitalized in Rome's Gemelli facility, Pope Francis’ health issues are compounded by his earlier history of pleurisy and a partial lung removal that make him more susceptible to pneumonia. Speculation has risen regarding his potential resignation, echoing the path taken by his predecessor, Benedict XVI. However, close associates and biographers assert that he has no intention of resigning, as the Pope manages his responsibilities even from the hospital.
Looking ahead, the year 2025 holds significance for the Catholic Church, with the upcoming Holy Year expected to welcome around 32 million pilgrims to Rome.
