The aftermath of the incident remains ongoing with investigations continuing as the community mourns the loss.

The Bayesian, which sank off Sicily’s coast during a fierce storm on August 19 last year, encountered winds of over 80mph that struck the vessel, leading to an uncontrollable flooding situation, according to an interim report by the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). The incident left seven of the 22 passengers dead, including Major Lynch, aged 59, and his daughter Hannah, aged 18.

The yacht capsized near Portofino just before dawn. Reports indicate it leaned dangerously to a 90-degree angle within a mere 15 seconds, causing chaos on the deck, with people and objects being violently tossed about.

The MAIB was definitive in its account, stating there were no signs of internal flooding until water rushed in over the starboard side, which overwhelmed the internal spaces moments later. Andrew Moll, MAIB's chief inspector, remarked that once the vessel tilted beyond a 70-degree angle, recovery became “irrecoverable.”

Notably, the yacht was referenced as "vulnerable" to even lighter winds of 73 mph, a detail that had not been made clear to the owner and crew and was not included in the yacht's stability documentation.

As a UK-registered vessel, the MAIB is leading the investigation with the final report yet to be released, pending legal measures undertaken by Italian authorities, which currently hinder access to the wreck.

In a recent setback, recovery operations to raise the 56-meter yacht were paused following the death of a diver involved in salvage efforts. Recovery is anticipated to resume shortly.

Prior to its tragic sinking, the yacht had sought safety from bad weather, with the crew adjusting sails in an effort to shelter. However, wind speeds escalated rapidly from a mere 9mph at 03:00 to an alarming almost 81 mph by 04:06. As storm conditions worsened, essential tasks like closing hatches were underway when the capsizing occurred.

Survivors managed to escape on lifeboats and were subsequently rescued by a nearby yacht. Mike Lynch, a prominent figure in the UK tech scene, was often likened to Bill Gates for his significant contributions before facing a tumultuous chapter in his life marked by legal difficulties and his extradition to the US.

The tragedy also claimed the lives of notable individuals including Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, as well as US attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, alongside the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. Among the survivors was Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. The UK continues to reflect on the losses while awaiting further investigations and inquest proceedings surrounding the incident.
