In brief

As Taiwan’s small factories navigate through tariff changes imposed by President Trump, uncertainty in global trade continues to burden local businesses. These manufacturers must adapt to fluctuating conditions while anticipating possible future tariffs.

In the aftermath of President Trump’s sweeping tariffs, small manufacturers in Taiwan are feeling the pressure as they prepare for a challenging business environment. Alex Tang, owner of Aegis CNC in Taichung, Taiwan, shares his concerns about the ripple effects that tariffs could have on the island's export-driven economy. Despite a temporary reprieve from the heightened tariffs, which currently sit at 10 percent rather than the 32 percent initially threatened, uncertainty looms large. Many U.S. importers are placing orders on hold, unsure of how future tariff policies might unfold. Tang emphasized, “It’s the butterfly effect.” The intricate web of global trade means that disruptions could impact businesses in ways that are difficult to foresee.During a week of interviews in Taichung, other local manufacturers echoed Tang's sentiments, highlighting that the unpredictability of tariffs creates an added burden beyond the direct costs. Notably, competitors from China, facing tariffs as steep as 145 percent on their exports to the U.S., may now seek new markets, intensifying competition for Taiwanese products.Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te recently met with business owners in Taichung to discuss how tariffs are impacting local manufacturing. While the current situation offers some breathing room, the persistent uncertainty about future policy changes keeps these small manufacturers on edge, as they strive to remain resilient in an increasingly volatile market.
